Tour Overview

Your Colombia Coffee Tour and the Caribbean Coast begins in the coffee region of Risaralda and its capital city Pereira and ends in Cartagena de Indias a Caribbean city on the northern coast of Colombia. In Pereira enjoy the verdure of Colombia’s landscape and coffee estates before immersing yourself in the rich culture and heritage of Cartagena.

In the coffee region of Pereira, expose yourself to Colombia’s world-class coffee and the production processes of a local plantation while sampling their delicious brews. After experiencing the coffee plantations up close, traverse Caracoli Canopy. From high above, look down at the rich flora of the coffee plantations and bamboo forest below. Awake your senses while in Pereira without caffeine as you kayak the rapids of Rio Barragan.

Departing Pereira, travel to Cartagena, a UNESCO world heritage site known for its stunning architecture and beautiful Caribbean coast. Stroll the historic streets of Cartagena and engulf yourself in the rich surroundings of brightly colored buildings and abundant courtyard gardens. While in the Cartagena you will visit the mud baths at the Totumo Volcano and Isla del Rosario, one of 46 natural National Parks of Colombia, created to protect the coral reefs off the Colombian Caribbean coast. As a farewell to Colombia, you will enjoy a private excursion of the local markets. With the guidance of a local Chef, you will select the freshest ingredients before travelling to the beaches of Manzanillo de Mar for your afternoon culinary lesson before enjoying your lunch on the beach.

Coffee Production in Venice

Wake refreshed as the aroma of the shade grown coffee plants float through the air. This morning transfer to Caldas in the Paisa region of Colombia, well known for the cultivation and production of Colombian coffee. In Caldas, visit a plantation that distributes its products to Peace Coffee, a sustainable and fair-trade company located in the United States. Enjoy the remarkable landscape surrounding this property declared a UNESCO World Heritage site before travelling to Venice, 20 minutes away. Once in Venice, witness the production process beginning with a discussion on the preparation of coffee beans, the roasting process, and the quality characteristics and properties of the different coffee varieties worldwide. The expert guide will lead the tour through the property explaining the various stages of production. Today, travel to Montenegro, its name meaning Black Mountain for the deep green colors of the surrounding vegetation. Montenegro is at the heart of Colombia’s coffee zone. Today, traverse Caracoli Canopy, 1900 meters above the ground. Crossing the canopy between flourishing trees enjoy the view from above of the sprawling coffee plantations, small streams, and a bamboo forest. Keep a lookout for sloths and several species of birds. After the excursion, return to the hotel for the evening.

This morning, travel 45 minutes to the river Rio Barragan located in the department of Quindio for a kayak or rafting excursion down the river. After debarking from the port, travel almost 9 miles before returning to shore after an exhilarating ride.

Colombia – Cartagena

This morning, transfer to the airport for the flight to Cartagena. Upon arrival in Cartagena be met at the hotel by the guide and transfer to the airport.

This afternoon, enjoy a guided tour of Cartagena’s Old Town. Walk along the walled old town through the historic streets, passing Churches, colonial houses with balconies, and visiting the Museum that was the residence of the five times president of the Republic, Rafael Nuńez. Also visit Santa Catalina Bastion and the craftsmanship at Las Bovedas, The Dungeons, where one can purchase locally handmade souvenirs. After, return to the hotel for the evening.

Today, take a guided of the Totumo Volcano, known for its medicinal properties, only 50 minutes away from Cartagena. After lunch, there will be the option of submerging into its crater to enjoy a healthy mud bath. After, take a regular bath at El Totumo Lagoon.

Today, cruise to Rosario Islands, to the south of the Bay of Cartagena. These Islands are a National Natural Park consisting of a group of coral islands surrounded by a crystal clear sea. The 23 coral islands were formed by volcano activity causing the seabed to rise creating ideal conditions for the development of coral reefs. This area is a great natural habitat for a large variety of marine fauna. After lunch, there will be an opportunity to swim and snorkel before returning to the hotel.

Highlights from our trip: Bogota museums and the Sunday bike ride (absolutely fabulous guide for that), Hotel in Villa de Leyva (the best!), Medellin (wonderful Aquarium, also visit to Level 1 neighborhood, also great restaurant), Botero sculptures and museum, walking around in Cartegena, hotel in Cartegena, great restaurants in Cartegena, snorkeling.
