Tour Overview
A journey through Papua New Guinea’s Indigenous Villages with Lake Murray will provide visitors with a unique, up-close cultural experience of the country’s local inhabitants. From Mount Hagen to Tari Valley, Yampu Travelers will see how the locals have thrived for hundreds of years with very little interference from the outside world. Throughout the journey, local villages share their fascinating tribal traditions and the daily customs of their people to their foreign guests with fun and genuine interactions.
The tour begins in the Capital of Papua New Guinea, Port Moresby. Visitors will have an exciting introduction to the country as they explore the capital, touring must-see sites including the National Museum and the Nature Park before flying to Mount Hagen.
Mount Hagen will serve as an entry point into the Sepik Region as modern amenities begin to blend with more traditional ways of life of the locals. From here, travelers will feel like true adventurers as they take a charter flight, deep into the jungles of the region. Travelers will spend two days of comprehensive touring on a journey through the traditions and customs of the Melpa People.
Moving on from Mount Hagen to Lake Murray, visitors will spend two nights in tranquil peace on one of the lake’s many islands, overlooking the waters at Lake Murray Lodge. Guests will be welcomed to the various villages around the lake where they will have the opportunity to witness and interact in a number of traditional activities.
Moving from Lake Murray to the Tari Valley, travelers will spend 2 nights nestled at the edge of the lush green rainforest, overlooking the serene Tari valley at Ambua Lodge. Days will be spent touring the villages and countryside of the iconic Huli tribe, the most known tribes in Papua New Guinea.

The Huli tribe that inhabit this area is the largest as well as one of the most colorful and iconic tribes of Papua New Guinea. The third-largest city in Papua New Guinea, Mount Hagen was unknown to westerners until the early 1930 as explorer flew over the lush jungle region. Much like then, local highlanders adorn traditional dress and maintain a modest way of life. Today, Mount Hagen City is the business heart of the Papua New Guinea highlands supporting important industries such as tea and coffee. Visitors can get a real feel of the country by learning from locals while visiting the quaint markets and handicraft shops.

At about 2000 square kilometres in the wet season, Lake Murray is the largest lake in Papua New Guinea. Island communities of stilted houses dot the water landscape of the lake. The tribes that inhabit the small, remote villages live their life on the water. Dugout canoes are their primary mode of transportation and the abundant stock of freshwater fish provide their staple food source. Tari is home to one of the most immediately recognizable cultures in Papua New Guinea – the “Huli Wigmen”. A proud, flamboyant tribe known for their ornate ceremonial “wigs” with dances and songs fashioned on that of the mating rituals of the Birds of Paradise – an encounter with the Huli’s is bound to be memorable. Well kept nature trails venture out into the wilderness, crossing traditional vine bridges, tracing clear mountain streams to secluded waterfalls surrounded by pristine, mid-montane jungle.
