Though a small and rural market town, Turmi is an important hub for travelers and locals alike. Surrounded by several Hamer people’s villages, the town offers a look into quintessential rural African culture. Visitors should be sure to take some time to visit the Hamer market where the villagers sell spices, produce, jewelry, and other goods. Depending on the season, visitors can witness the right of passage for Hamer boys with some Bull Jumping, a coming of age ceremony where young men walk on the backs of steer to be recognized as men and become able to marry.
