Lake Maggiore

Places You'll See

  • Lake Maggiore

Situated on the southern side of the Alps, Lake Maggiore, also known as Verbano or Lacus Verbanus in Latin, is a sizable lake spanning both Italy and Switzerland. It holds the distinction of being the second-largest lake in Italy and the largest in southern Switzerland. With its shores shared between the Italian regions of Piedmont and Lombardy and the Swiss canton of Ticino, Lake Maggiore stretches approximately 64 kilometers (40 miles) between Locarno and Arona. The region benefits from a mild climate that supports the growth of Mediterranean vegetation and boasts renowned gardens, including those found on the Borromean and Brissago Islands, Villa Taranto in Verbania, and the Alpinia Botanical Garden above Stresa. The lake is drained by the Ticino River and serves as a collection point for water from other significant lakes such as Lugano, Orta, and Varese.

  • Stresa

The town’s earliest mention in historical records dates back to January 15th, AD 998, where it was referred to as “STRIXSYA.” Over time, variations such as “STREXIA,” “STREXA,” and “STRESIA” also emerged. During the 15th century, it flourished as a fishing community and held feudal allegiance to the House of Visconti in Milan. Subsequently, it fell under the control of the Borromeo family. In 1948, renowned American author and journalist Ernest Hemingway visited the town, having featured the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromees in part of his 1929 novel, Farewell to Arms. Stresa further hosted the 10th International Hemingway Conference in 2002.
