Zagreb City Center Bike Tour

It’s time to get on your bicycle and start pedaling!

An easy and entertaining ride will take you to all the key sites in less than three hours, making this the perfect tour of Zagreb for a short stay. You'll discover the main highlights of the Upper Town, with its red-tile roofs, quaint cobblestone streets, and countless church spires, as well as the Lower Town, featuring architecturally diverse house facades, domes, and colorful murals created by street artists.

You'll pass by the magnificent Croatian National Theatre and St. Mark's Church, feel the energy of Zagreb's most vibrant green market—the Dolac Market—cross the mysterious Grič Tunnel, and admire the Cathedral from one of the most beautiful viewing points. The real treat of the tour is the stories about the Bloody Bridge and the noontime "big bang," as well as the tale of the magical powers of the Stone Gate and the manual lighting of the street lamps in the Upper Town, still practiced to this day.

The Cycling Zagreb adventure ends just around noon, so you can use your free time to explore the city on your own. Our recommendation would be Mirogoj—one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Europe, which serves as a stunning park and an open art gallery all in one. Of course, Zagreb offers countless museums and entertainment options. In the end, the choice is yours!

UNESCO’s Plitvice Lakes: Walk and Discover the Devil’s Garden

Depart from the Croatian capital, and in a couple of hours, you will reach Plitvice Lakes National Park.

No matter what kind of traveler you are, a visit to Croatia wouldn't be complete without experiencing Plitvice Lakes. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its indescribable natural beauty. Our sightseeing approach will provide you with deep insights and the opportunity to explore Plitvice Lakes thoroughly, including some off-the-beaten-path trails.

The hike through the National Park will reveal untouched nature, highlighted by idyllic waterfalls and 16 interconnected cascading lakes. On old maps, the national park was referred to as the “Devil’s Garden,” but its dense forests, splashing waterfalls, and emerald lakes will remind you more of Heaven. A short boat and panoramic train ride will help you capture as much of the stunning landscape as possible, so sit back and admire this natural wonder.

You will be in awe of the magnificent scenery, so take your time during the ride to your hotel on the Adriatic coast to relax and reflect on your incredible day.

UNESCO’s Paklenica - City of Zadar with Sea Organ

The rugged peaks of the Velebit massif in Paklenica National Park are just a stone's throw from the hotel.

Croatia's largest forest area is woven with numerous ravines and rivers, making this UNESCO World Heritage Site an excellent area for your next adventure. So, lace up your hiking boots and traverse a complex nature full of contrasts—Wild West scenery with sharp karst formations on one side and soft greenery on the other.

The most attractive points are the vertically carved canyons and impressive cliffs, which are adorned with climbers, as this is the most renowned climbing site in Croatia. After experiencing the abundance of geomorphological forms, diverse flora and fauna, and untouched landscapes, you will be equally amazed by Tito’s nuclear bunker that follows.

Our “return to civilization” comes with a great reason—to explore Zadar, the oldest continuously inhabited city in Croatia. This city showcases the glory of Gothic-Romanesque architecture found in the Cathedral of Saint Anastasia, the largest cathedral in the Dalmatia region, and St. Donatus, a monumental round structure from the 9th century with a base dating from Roman times.

Afterwards, we will be drawn to the furthest end of the peninsula to see an extraordinary sight—the Sea Organ, an experimental musical instrument whose melodies are created by the breaking waves on tubes located underneath a set of marble steps. The “Greeting to the Sun” will provide the perfect end to this rich, fulfilling day. Stroll through the city on your own and treat yourself to one of the many cosmopolitan cafes.

Drive back to the hotel in just under an hour.

Krka walk with boat ride to the Skradin town – City of Šibenik

The first part of this day will be dedicated to the sparkling green of the Croatian rivers.

The joined waters of the Krka River and its largest tributary, the Čikola River, fall over the 17 cascades of Skradinski Buk waterfall, creating an absolutely magical place. This picturesque and most unusual confluence in Croatia is well known for its open vistas and island formations covered in aquatic plants.

Hiking along the banks of the Krka River while feeling the splashes of the waterfall nearby will be both fun and refreshing. However, the full impression of the Krka River’s mightiness can only be appreciated by cruising along it all the way to Skradin town. Once you arrive, don’t miss the opportunity to try the local specialty, Skradin risotto.

In the second part of the day, the city of Šibenik awaits. This medieval Venetian city is famous for its narrow, curvy streets, stone houses, stairs, and remnants of the old city walls. It is home to many significant landmarks, among which is the Cathedral of Saint James (listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site). This magnificent building was constructed by locals over hundreds of years and certainly deserves special acknowledgment on this tour.

Šibenik is the perfect town to take a short break. Spend your free time exploring Šibenik and its lovely squares on your own.

The Historical Maze of Dalmatia: Trogir and Split

Feeling read more...

Feeling lucky to start your day in Trogir, a charming little town with medieval walls, magical architecture, and a wonderful sea view, you are ready for today’s adventure.

Being in this town will seem like you traveled back in time through centuries, all the way to Trogir’s Golden era, still visible today in the magnificent Cipiko Palace, the Venetian Cathedral of St. Lawrence, the Gothic town hall, and the mighty walls along the waterfront.

Walking through the city center (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) with its cobbled streets and passages, among different architectural styles, listening to stories about medieval times, and feeling the atmosphere of glorious times past, you will find yourself immersed in the incredible history of Trogir.

A natural unfolding to this fulfilled day is a visit to the city of Split, the successor of Solin and the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. Split was actually the periphery of Solin, whose very important citizen – the emperor Diocletian – chose Split’s downtown as the place for his palace. That is how the splendor of Split began and how the heart of the city was shaped.

Walking down Split's streets is similar to wandering through a historical labyrinth. You will enter through the bronze gate in the south, pass by the Cathedral of St. Domnius, one of the best-preserved buildings of Roman times, and reach the golden gate in the north to touch the left toe of the statue of Gregory of Nin. According to legend, all visitors who touch the toe of the statue will ensure their return to Split someday.

Our tour ends on the busy seafront, complete with palms and yachts, colorful shops in Roman passages, and charming bars with creative interiors. Spend your free time enjoying the remarkable view of Split’s historical center from Marjan Hill and feeling the life and energy of the locals.

Skywalk Biokovo

Meet one more jewel of Croatian nature, the Biokovo Mountain, whose rampart peaks, 1,500 meters above the Makarska Riviera, offer exceptional views of the sea and nearby islands. It is one of Croatia's most popular hiking destinations, with numerous paths winding up the hills past olive groves, vineyards, and pine forests. Some say it owes its name to the whiteness of the snow-covered peaks (bio in Croatian means white), while others claim that the word biokovo used to be a synonym for tempest—a specific type of wind locally also called bura.

The nature reserve is known among nature lovers for the great number of endemic animal and plant species. Recently, its fame has spread thanks to the Skywalk—a 25-meter-long glass promenade that offers spectacular views of the Makarska Riviera. The local myth says that when the sky is clear and bright, you can even see Italy, all the way across the Adriatic!

As a perfect way to end your tour, why wouldn’t you indulge yourself with delicacies at some of Split’s squares or promenades and catch the true vibe of the Adriatic coast?

Portugal & Spain and India

Two separate covid-postponed trips with Yampu in 2022. Portugal/Spain in October and India in November. I have been traveling with them since 2016, and these are the additional destinations; South Africa/Zimbabwe/Zambia, Cuba, and Peru. A custom trip is worth it, especially if you are trying to maximize your experience at a destination you’re unfamiliar with and/or is far from your home. They organize just about everything for you in detailed fashion and your job is to enjoy the trip! That said, since nothing is perfect, the couple of times I have a had small issue, it has always been resolved. Communication is very good. You will likely be amazed with how efficient and relaxing a trip can be when it is put together by a travel expert. A helpful hint if you’re going to be a first-time traveler with Yampu; thoroughly read the draft itinerary they send, and if you see something you’d rather not do, or think of something you want to include, just tell them! It’s your custom trip and the beauty of Yampu is they are happy work with you to create the itinerary. 🙂
