Tour Overview

This once in a lifetime vacation in South America takes you to the best sites in six exquisite countries, visiting Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina and Brazil. We take you on a train ride to Machu Picchu, a crossing from Peru to Bolivia through Lake Titicaca. You will spend a night in the Island of the Sun, on the shores of the lake, and a day in La Paz. See the tango in Buenos Aires and experience the night life of Brazil’s city on the sea, Rio de Janeiro.

After a trip to La Paz, Bolivia’s unique capital, we travel overland to the Uyuni salt flats, a massive area that beautifully reflects the sapphire blue of the Andean skies. We then cross the Andes into Chile to visit the Atacama Desert. It is the highest, driest desert in the world with salt flats, geysers, hot springs and the Andes looming in the distance. After two days in Santiago, Chile’s capital, we take you to Argentina’s majestic lake district and then on to see the tango in Buenos Aires. The 275 waterfalls of Iguazu Falls always inspire Yampu travelers. We go to both sides of the falls, starting in Argentina and ending in Brazil. Our trip ends in the lively Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.

Recently, following UNESCO recommendations, Peruvian authorities have placed restrictions on the visitation of Machu Picchu, the lost Incan ruins. Currently, no more than 2,500 people daily will be allowed to visit the ruins. While these new restrictions are great for the preservation of the ruins, they may cause some difficulties in your ability to visit them, so we recommend booking with plenty of notice.

It then reaches the gentler, rolling Andean Plains, where vicuña and alpaca can be seen. The glass-walled observation car provides the perfect opportunity to view the beautiful scenery. The journey is broken by a scenic stop at La Raya, which is also the highest point on the route. Three-course lunch included. Restaurant and bar service is available at an additional cost. The train leaves Cuzco at 8 a.m. and arrives in Puno at 6:30 p.m.

*Our tours are guided, not escorted. You will be part of a medium-sized group for the day excursions, not necessarily the same group for the entire itinerary. Transfers between airports and hotels (and vice versa) are usually offered on a private basis. Quote includes standard rooms in all hotels unless otherwise specified. Upgrades to superior rooms or suites, and private tours are available at an additional cost.

*During the rainy season (November to March) the Uyuni salt flats get flooded, making it sometimes difficult to visit the area and also cross from Bolivia to Chile. We do not recommend booking this program between those dates.

El Querandi
A bar since 1920 and restored in 1992, El Querandi is considered one of the best places in San Telmo to experience tango. Considered to be living evidence of civic memory by the Museum of the City of Buenos Aires, it has the capacity to hold two hundred people. The individual tables, combined with its wreathed columns, boisserie and deep shaped wood, create a romantic and intimate atmosphere, and the cuisine is excellent. Includes round trip shared transfers, dinner, and show. Dinner is a 3 course meal including beverages (soft drinks and wine). This venue holds 120 people.

Esquina Carlos Gardel
It first opened its doors in 1893, as a restaurant and hotel, and soon became a true Buenos Aires classic. After reopening its doors and keeping the Art Nouveau style of the most luxurious old-time dining rooms, it provides authentic shows with a pure essence of the Argentine tango. A great variety of local and international cuisine and selected wines are on offer to compliment the surroundings. Includes round trip shared transfers, dinner, and show. Dinner is a 3 course meal including beverages (soft drinks and wine). This venue holds 410 people.

Rojo Tango
Fascinating artistic madness that conquers all senses by combining movement, colors, sound, fragrances and flavors. Rojo Passion: A cabaret designed by Philippe Starck, created to bring back nostalgic times that already passed, with the strength of a new show full of fantasy and sensuality. Rojo Flavor: A gastronomic proposal with an attitude of its own, that privileges the subtlety of perfumes and textures, accompanied with Baron B champagne. Rojo Tango: The tango returns right from the myth and becomes an intense reality throughout a different kind of live show, where the bodies are guided by the trance of a bandoneon and explode in a never ending ecstasy. Includes round trip private transfers, dinner, and show. Dinner is a 3 course meal including beverages (soft drinks and wine). This venue holds 100 people.

Gala Tango
Its architecture, French style decoration and the exclusive refined details make Gala Tango the most glamorous place in Buenos Aires. Since your first contact with Gala Tango until the end of the show, you will feel a different, overwhelming experience. Gourmet cuisine, specially designed for the strictest guests, complemented with wines from one of the most exclusive wine-houses in Argentina. An elegant, warm, refined Tango and Folklore show defines Gala Tango as a superior option in popular art. The Orchestra is formed by a quintet (piano, large concertina, 2 violins, and double bass) accompanied by two tango singers, four dancing couples, a “charango” player and “boleadoras”. Includes round trip private transfers, dinner, and show. Dinner is a 3 course meal including beverages (soft drinks and wine). This venue holds 80 people.

Machu Picchu

Early morning transfer to the train station. The train will take through the Sacred Valley of the Incas up to the town of Aguas Calientes. From here, board a bus to Machu Picchu and then have a guided tour of the ruins. Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas, was a flourishing ceremonial and agricultural site, probably the gateway to the jungle marshes of the Inca Empire. The central buildings were erected with the polished stone works of the Cusco Imperial style, though the site was probably occupied well before the Incas started their expansion. It was associated with the earth cult revolving around the coca leaf, which was a privilege of the Inca royal family and priests. Enjoy lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge, at the entrance of the ruins, before returning to the hotel at leisure. In the evening, enjoy a wonderful dinner at the hotel or in the town of Aguas Calientes.
Note: Government regulations limit the number of visitors to Machu Picchu daily. Entrance is subject to availability. Please book with plenty of notice so Yampu may confirm entrance to the ruins. Machu Picchu entrance tickets are nonrefundable and nontransferable.

Sugar Loaf

Today enjoy a private Half Day Tour to the Sugar Loaf with private driver/guide.
This tour begins with a stroll through downtown Rio, passing by the Sambodrome, and the Metropolitan Cathedral, in pyramid form, with internal diameter of 96 meters and height of 80 meters. Get to know the traditional Cinelandia square with the historical buildings, the Municipal Theater, the National Library and the National Museum of Fine Arts. By taking the Aterro do Flamengo, one will be taken to the neighborhood of Urca where they will find one of the largest symbols of the city: The Sugar Loaf. This visit is made in two steps by cable car. The first cable car takes passengers to Urca Hill which is 215 meters high and provides a beautiful view of the Guanabara Bay and its islands, the Rio-Niteroi bridge and Corcovado hill. From this stage, a second cable car will be taken up to the top with 395 meters to find a splendid view of Copacabana beach, the Santa Cruz fortress and some beaches of Niteroi.

Note: If one would like to experience a typical Brazilian lunch after the tour, please let Yampu know and it can be added.

Afternoon private tour to Corcovado with private driver and guide. The tour begins in Cosme Velho's neighborhood. The cog train rolls through the Tijuca Forest, the largest urban forest in the world and up to the statue. Once there, enjoy a panoramic and extraordinary view of Rio, including the Sugar Loaf, the Guanabara Bay, the beaches of Southern Zone and the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon. At the peak of the hill is Christ the Redeemer, the art deco statue of Jesus Christ and icon of Rio. After the visit of the Corcovado, the tour continues to Sao Conrado area with a brief stop at the Pepino beach where one can appreciate hang gliders overhead. Transfer back to the hotel.
Tonight, enjoy Rio by night! Besides being a scenic city, Rio de Janeiro is also a champion of bohemian life. This evening tour starts with a delicious dinner in a typical Brazilian restaurant. After dinner, enjoy a Brazilian music presentation at the famous Rio Plataforma. Rio Plataforma is one of the premier places to listen to the best of Brazilian music. The Rio Plataforma is not open on Sundays.
If one prefers a more mellow experience Yampu recommends the show at the Rio Scenarium (available at an additional cost, this tour does not include dinner). Located in the Lapa area, Rio Scenarium is one of the premier places to listen to the best of Brazilian music, and where the real carioca spirit of bohemian way of life can be felt. The venue is an antique shop during the day, and a live music bar during the night. The programming changes every month. Show ends around midnight.

We had a great trip and were happy with the service provided by Yampu

We had a great trip and were happy with the service provided by Yampu. You can use my name as a reference. I have traveled to over 30 countries and your travel company made our trip to Peru, Argentina and Brazil one of the best and hassle free.

We know who we will call when we are ready to go again

Our first trip with Yampu Tours was in 2003 when it was Kon-Tiki Tours and Travel. We contacted Jose Irauzqui and his team to create a special trip for us to Chile. (We travel by ourselves on a customized tour with a driver and an English speaking guide). We told Jose what we wanted to do and where we wanted to go, our time limits and anything else he needed to know and he and his staff went from there creating a wonderful trip with lots of memories for us. We were so impressed by the service we got that when we were ready to return to south-america to visit Peru in 2006, we immediately contacted Jose, who again came through for us. Most of our trips are ecological in nature. My daughter is an exotic animal veterinarian and we travel to see animals in the wild. All of our trips through Yampu have comprised an ecological component, which we have built our vacations around. Many of the ecological lodges we stayed in were small in size, so we start making our plans at the beginning of the year for a trip in the fall because of availability. We traveled with Yampu to southern Brazil in 2004, Peru in 2006, Argentina in 2007 and again to Peru in 2012. Some parts of our trips were done with groups, but on the most part, we had private customized tours. Yampu has a terrific network system of tour providers in all these countries and through five trips we have only had one complaint, which Yampu took care of when we returned. The problem was with a tour guide and therefore was beyond Yampu’s control until we got back as we did not complain at the time to the local agency. Next time we will handle it locally as Yampu provides you with a list of people to contact along the way. The number of fabulous, well-informed tour guides far outweighed that one incident. The above trips are just the ones my husband and I have gone on with our daughter through Yampu. My daughter has used Yampu for many trips throughout Central and south-america with her friends. We just returned from our second trip to Peru in November and she is off to Ecuador in January. We still have places in south-america we wish to visit, it is a big continent and very diverse. We know who we will call when we are ready to go again. We were very fortunate to find Yampu. And now Yampu has expanded to other parts of the world!

I cannot really convey in a few sentences how satisfied we were with your services.

I never took the time to thank you for the wonderful arrangements made by you and your team at Yampu for a trip we made in late January of this year to Peru and Bolivia. I cannot really convey in a few sentences how satisfied we were with your services. We had never used a travel company before this trip. Considering the fact that we were traveling to third-world countries where life simply is not the same as here in the U.S., we were wonderfully surprised at the smoothness of all of our travel. We attribute this to your choice of tour guides and accommodations chosen in those countries. I thought of you and Yampu recently because we are planning to travel to southern Spain next year, but unfortunately for us you don’t service Spain! Some day we plan to travel to Chile and Argentina, and hope to make use of your services again. Thanks again for such great travel arrangements.
