Tour Overview
Your luxury trips starts at the Lima, the world class foodie destination. Feast on exquisite seafood at a classic cevicheria in Miraflores as you overlook the ocean. Lima has historical riches as well as a vibrant modern art scene. You may choose to stay at the classic Miraflores Park Hotel in Lima or the luxury new Hotel B boutique hotel.
Your introduction to the Andes will be a night in Arequipa, the white city. Then you will be transported acros the altiplano to a different reality, the Colca Canyon, where Andean Condors can be seen in their natural habitats. Visit authentic little villages, horseback rise the lovely trails, feed a baby lamb, and watch for Condors. Stay at the luxurious Las Casitas del Colca in Colca Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world. In 2017, there will be a new luxury overnight train connecting the Colca Canyon with Lake Titicaca.
Next we will go to the lovely Cusco, where we will wander the cobble stone streets in search of the perfect Pisco Sour. We meander past Inca Walls, Spanish Architecture, and local markets and stroll through laidback and traditional Andeaad villages. Go to the outer lying ruins, and continue until the evening for a sundowner. At night, pamper yourself at the Palacio Nazarenas, the Monasterio Hotel in Cusco, or one of the lovely smaller boutique hotels. The next morning, enjoy a delicious brunch on board the Belmond Hiram Bingham, a luxury train that will whisk you through the scenic countryside to Machu Picchu. We will overnight here to have plenty of time to enjoy this magnificent place. If your up for some hiking, we will arrange special hiking permits of the sites nearby.
Traveling to Lake Titicaca, the birthplace of the Inca civilization, you will soak in the splendor of the high altitude lake and enjoy all-inclusive activities at Titilaka Lodge including kayaking or paddle boarding. Peruvian authorities have placed restrictions on the visitation of Machu Picchu, the lost Incan ruins. Currently, no more than 2,500 people daily will be allowed to visit the ruins. These new restrictions are great for the preservation of the ruins. We recommend booking with plenty of notice. Ask us about the other special access we can get permits for you to enjoy.

*Andean Explorer train from Cusco to Puno or Puno to Cusco (Monday, Wednesday and Saturday only). A fantastic train ride that takes a gentle climb to higher and cooler altitudes. The first half of the journey is dominated by the magnificent Andean Mountains which tower over the deep valleys of the meandering Huatanay River. It then reaches the gentler, rolling Andean Plains, where vicuña and alpaca can be seen. The glass-walled observation car provides the perfect opportunity to view the beautiful scenery. The journey is broken by a scenic stop at La Raya, which is also the highest point on the route. A three-course lunch included. Restaurant and bar service is available at an additional cost. Train leaves Cusco at 8 a.m. and arrives at Puno at 6:00 p.m.

Rowing Around the Reeds
Take a paddle boat tour through the totora reeds on the lake near the hotel. The totora reeds are aquatic plants used by the locals for different purposes ranging from construction to food. Just like land, the reed areas are divided among the villagers, who every so often harvest them for various uses. The reeds also provide a special ecosystem for birds such as wrens, grebes, moorhens and egrets.

Inkanatavi
Your excursion starts with a ride by car towards the south of the Titilaka refuge, then a light ascent on foot to a rocky mountain to reach the remains of an Inca Trail, where some polished stone seats were finely carved in large rocks and you can enjoy the panoramic view of the vast lake. After the descent, visit the local community for a brief rest and view their colorful textiles.

Walk towards the east of the Titilaka refuge, through a peninsula to visit the rustic town community of Socca. Bird Watching
Lake Titicaca is part of the RAMSAR Convention on Wetlands, a conservation and protection of the Wetlands and its wild life, where you can see more than 60 species, including waterfowl and shore birds and some others that are found inland. Depending on the season, you can see migratory birds such as flamingos, shorebirds, aquatic birds, among others, and resident birds like a variety of ducks, herons and grebes. Significantly, from the Titilaka Hotel one can see the Titicaca grebes (Rollandia microptera), endemic birds to the Titicaca Basin (Peru and Bolivia) in its natural habitat, which is in danger of extinction according to CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). The Bird Watching route shall be determined according to the season and location by monitoring the places frequented by these birds.

Half Day Excursions; Uros
Enjoy a guided visit to Uros floating isles on Lake Titicaca, located on the National Reserve of Titicaca on the Bay of Puno. Made from reeds called totora these Islands are home of the Uros community which pre-dates the Incan civilization. They call themselves kot-suña or people of the lake who claim to have "black blood", are consequently immune to the cold and consider themselves the owners of the lake and its waters. They continue living on the islands by fishing, weaving and now, tourism.

Titilaka Arch
Take a familiarization walk around the Titilaka Lodge. In this excursion, see the community lifestyle adjacent to the hotel, observing residents in their daily tasks. Then ascend towards a stone arch, which is at the top of a hill from where you can see the landscape and magnificent view of the lake, the communities within and the idyllic environment.

Taquile
Take a boat ride to the island of Taquile, where you can see the beautiful mountain ranges of Cordillera Real of Bolivia and its snow peaks. This traditional island is inhabited by islanders of Quechua origin, as opposed to the majority of population of Puno who are of Aymara origin. Taquile lives in its own world, completely detached from the rest of the world, maintaining their ancient Quechua traditions. Its scenery is stunning, red soil in contrast with the intense blue of the lake, the sky and a striking background of snowcapped mountains of the Cordillera Real. On the higher part of the island are remains of ancient stone buildings, somewhat like quarters and roads. One can also view stone tombs. Enjoy lunch prepared by the Taquile locals. Amantani
A few kilometers north of Taquile is the beautiful island of Amantani located in front of the peninsula Capachica. It is almost circular in shape and is the largest island in the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca. The transfer from Titilaka takes about one hour in a motor boat and as you approach the island, you can see its large mountains with its highest point, the Llacastiti peak. Situated 320 meters above the lake, it has interesting ancient stone structures used during the celebration of their festivals and rituals to Pacha Mama (Mother Earth) honored every year as the source of their sustenance and agricultural livelihood. During the tour of the island get to know the locals of about 800 families, their prime source of living which is farming, producing potatoes, tubers, barley and beans. Due to the existence of granite in Llacastiti, they have developed it as a handicraft.

Sillustani
Enjoy a guided tour in Sillustani, a peninsula facing the Umayo lagoon, a short distance from Puno. It was a burial ground of the Colla tribe that lived in the region long before the Inca expansion. The phallic structures known as Chullpas, which symbolized life and birth, are ancient and impressive tombs from the pre-Inca period, served as burial places for chiefs and important people. Later the site was inhabited by the Incas, who made their own version of these towers. That is why there are two types - the rough, smaller towers, and the smooth, larger ones made by the Incas. The biggest tower took about 50 years to make and consists of rocks weighing anywhere from 2 to 6 tons; an interesting site to visit, with a combination of archaeology, history and rustic landscapes.

Mountain Biking to Inkanatavi
An excursion with a demanding level where you take an approximately two hours ride in mountain bike through the communities around this area of Lake Titicaca, to Inkanatavi, chosen name for the remains of an Inca Trail built on the edge of a rocky mountain. The ascent up the Inca Trail is moderate and may have some difficulty after riding the bike; the view from the top is privileged and near the Inca Trail some seats were finely carved into a rock. After the descent you may take some refreshing snacks to recharge the energies spent and return by private car to the hotel.

Perka
Start the excursion heading towards the totora reeds near Titilaka refuge sailing towards the west, observing these aquatic plants that are still utilized by the locals in their daily tasks. Continue to the shores of the peninsula of Chucuito, with an opportunity to see shore birds such as ducks, the Andean seagulls, flamingos and grebes and then visit homes of the locals and their nearby farmlands. Perka is a quiet community that practically does not have any connection with tourism but it is possible to enjoy its beaches and to enjoy some aperitifs on the shores of the lake in a relaxing peaceful ambience.

The excursion begins with Inkanatavi taking a van heading towards the south of the Titilaka refuge and then climb on foot to the rocky mountain, to reach an interesting Inca Trail ruins, where has polished seats carved in large rocks, and you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of Lake Titicaca. After the descent, visit the local community for a break and appreciate its colorful textiles. Continue the journey south to visit the beautiful colonial churches of Juli and Pomata, which were the center of evangelization of the highland plateaus. The churches have striking architecture, gold-leafed altars, still maintain remarkable paintings from the viceroyalty era and massive bells that still toll up to today.

This morning, you will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the Larco Museum located in the traditional Pueblo Libre district. Founded by Rafael Larco Hoyle en 1926, The museum is located inside a viceregal mansion built on a pre-Columbian pyramid of the 7th century and it houses the most complete pre-Hispanic collection of gold and silver artifacts as well pieces of erotic art. Over 45,000 archaeological artifacts bear witness of five thousand years of Peruvian history. You will return to your hotel at the end of the tour. Lunch and dinner included.
This afternoon, you will visit the Lima Center, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, where you will know the Cathedral of Lima, located in the Plaza Mayor, the most important church in Peru built between 1542 and 1622, and one of several beautiful colonial buildings which are an important part of the identity of the city. Then you will walk to the Casa Aliaga - house of the Viceroyalty handed over by Francisco Pizarro to one of his captains (Jeronimo de Aliaga) when he founded the city - an authentic jewel of colonial architecture currently inhabited by family members. Continue your tour visiting the Church of Santo Domingo, built at the end of the sixteenth century, which concentrates several altars and sculptures of the Viceroyalty, exposing different eras and aesthetic manifestations. Continue to the exclusive and traditional neighborhood of Yanahuara, surrounded by archaeological remains and where one of the flagship churches of the cusquena mestizo art, built in 1750, is located.

This morning, you will be picked up from your hotel by private car to begin your journey of approximately 3 hours from Arequipa to Chivay, in the Colca Canyon. As we leave Arequipa, we cross the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve, passing by Pampa Canahuas before making a stop at Patapampa. Patapampa, the highest point of the trip to Chivay, offering a special viewpoint of the Andes situated at 4,800 meters (16,109 feet) above sea level.
As you get out of the vehicle, you will find yourself a bit short of breath, not only from the altitude, but from the beauty of the unusual landscape. For years and years, travelers have been placing "apachetas", or small stone towers (commonly called rock cairns in English), showing the way along the highest part of the route and as homage to the Apus or Andean mountains. After taking in the majestic views of the cordillera and the mountains, we will return to the vehicle and continue on to the town of Chivay. This morning, your private guide will pick you up from the hotel to begin exploring the towns and sites along the Canyon rim. We will begin our day with a visit famous Cruz del Condor viewpoint to see the majestic flight of the Andean condors.
After taking in the beautiful sight of these enormous birds riding on the winds from the canyon, we will begin our return towards Arequipa, making stops along the way. We will visit the quaint town of Yanque and visit its church before visiting the other Andean villages of Achoma, Maca (visiting it's church) and Pinchollo. We will also stop at the Antahuilque viewpoint, known for its mysterious lagoons, where we can observe the Andenes or cultivation terraces for which the canyon is famous. Today you will have time to sleep in and relax a bit before your private car picks you up from your hotel to be transferred to Puno. Lunch included at a local restaurant.
Upon arrival, you will be transferred to Titilaka lodge. On your way to Titilaka, you will pass through Juliaca City and the port city of Puno. Upon arrival at the Lodge, check-in, rest, and enjoy the scenery. Based on the region's local cuisine and specially prepared for you, lunch is served from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm.
An afternoon siesta is recommended and plenty of liquids to help you acclimate to the altitude. Enjoy Teatime at 3:00pm, followed by activities near the lodge in the afternoon. Explore the lake and paddle through nearby Totora reeds as you choose from a selection of nautical activities including kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, and sailing, among others. Or, if you prefer, ride a bicycle through the fields of Plateria, go on a walk in nearby rural paths, or observe local birds and the striking landscapes of Puno's unique geography.

In the morning your guides will take you by car and boat to visit the legendary Uros Floating Islands located near the protected Titicaca National Reserve. Here you will meet one of the traditional families that inhabit these unique islands. The Uro-Aymara peoples are a proud culture where men are skilled reed raftsmen and women expert textile weavers. Calling themselves kot-suna or, "people of the lake", the Uro-Aymara were once persecuted by other groups and forced to relocate to Lake Titicaca where they found refuge on manmade Totora reed islands. Home to the area's best preserved chullpas, or ancient funerary towers, Sillustani is a must for travelers to the area. Once a burial ground for the Pucara, Tiahuanaco, and Ccolla pre-Incan cultures, Sillustani harbors chullpas of these and the Incan period, providing a contrasting range of these forms. Symbolizing life and birth, these ancient tombs were used to house the remains of chiefs and other dignitaries. Made up of stones weighing anywhere from 2 to 6 tons, the biggest tower took about 50 years to construct. Combining archaeology, history, and beautiful views of a wonderful landscape, Sillustani is an impressive site we strongly recommend you see. This afternoon is at your leisure to acclimate. Cusco's elevation is approximately 3,400 meters (11,200 feet), so we highly recommend resting as soon as you arrive for a few hours and taking in some coca tea.
Cusco is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Americas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ruins of the old Inca city became the foundation for the Spanish architecture you see today, and many of the stone walls that line the streets were built by the Incas.

This morning, enjoy a private walking tour of Cusco where you will visit the Korikancha Temple, or Temple of the Sun, and the Cathedral and its Art Museum. During your tour today you have the option to visit the Casa Concha museum or the San Pedro Market. The Casa Concha museum was recently renovated and houses over 360 archaeological pieces from Machu Picchu, recently returned by Yale University. San Pedro Market is a lively, local market where you will receive a briefing about the local Andean ingredients and have an opportunity to purchase them. This market visit is a great opportunity to interact with the locals either selling or purchasing items from the market.
This afternoon there will be time for lunch (lunch not included) before continuing to the nearby water shrine of Tambomachay (the Inca Fountains), Puca Pucara (the Red Fortress), the amphitheater of Kenko and finally the Sacsayhuaman Fortress. Upon arrival in the town of Aguas Calientes we will have a private guided tour of the ruins. Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas, was a flourishing ceremonial and agricultural site. The central buildings were erected with the polished stone works of the Cusco Imperial style, though the site was probably occupied well before the Incas started their expansion. It was associated with the earth cult, revolving around the Coca leaf, which was a privilege of the Inca Royal family and priests.
Typical English afternoon tea will be served at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. Return to your hotel for an overnight in Machu Picchu or Aguas Calientes.

Recently, following UNESCO recommendations, Peruvian authorities have placed restrictions on the visitation of Machu Picchu, the lost Incan ruins. Currently, no more than 2,500 people daily will be allowed to visit the ruins. While these new restrictions are great for the preservation of the ruins, they may cause some difficulties in your ability to visit them, so we recommend booking with plenty of notice.

Your local connections were very supportive
Even though the loss of the permanent resident card and the loops we had to jump through did stain the trip some, it was nothing against the enormous satisfaction with the whole trip. We were very impressed with entire arrangement. The guides were always on time and all of them were extremely helpful and knowledgeable in their field. The timing of each segment of the tour was excellent and we really felt a great combination of valuable tour segments and adequate time to explore on our own and still get time for a little relaxing. The Amazon was great and the Inkaterra Reservation was first class. The tours there were great. The only disappointment was the lack of animal life outside of the compound. Of course the Machu Picchu was beyond belief and we really enjoyed the climbing of the Huayna Picchu. We topped the day with trekking to the Sun Gate. Cusco was a great experience and it was a real eye opener to travel and visit the backcountry of Peru and see how people live there. It is like going back several hundred years but more importantly it looked like people enjoyed their life.We had not set our hopes for bolivia very high but it was a real surprise. We enjoyed the islands and got a chance to visit one of the floating islands. The trip was very improved by our excellent guide Icla. She was extremely knowledgeable and a pleasure to be around. La Paz is a very interesting city and with the unexpected extra days there we got to know the city even better.Your local connections were very supportive while we dealt with our paperwork issue and even arranged for a guide and bus to take us to the airport when we finally headed home. Back home we are so much aware of the culture and people of part of south-america and will most likely try other destinations in that part of the world in the future.
