Actun Tunichil Muknal: For your Inner Adventure Junkie

The most impressive and artifact-rich Maya ceremonial caves ever found

 Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave

Starting with a hike through the jungle of the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, you will immerse yourself waist deep into the rushing waters of 3 different river crossings. Here you’ll enter the habitat of jungle wildlife such as lizards, birds, monkeys, and river otters. After about 45 minutes of following animal tracks, and embracing the jungle ambiance, you come to a clearing where you first see what can only be described as a cave of wonders… Actun Tunichil Muknal.

Actun Tunichil Muknal (or known as ATM to locals) is a cave in Belize, recognized as one of the most intriguing archaeological sites of the nation. Near San Ignacio, ATM is notable for the Mayan remains of skeletons, ceramics, and stoneware. Thought to be home to the Mayan Gods, Actun Tunichil Muknal radiates the fascinating history of the Mayan culture. The brilliance of the modified cave formations suggest the creation of alters for offerings, and the intricate decoration throughout the site help express stories suggesting their sacrificial ceremonies.

File:Actun Tunichil Muknal.jpgThe most highly recognized remains are that of the fully intact skeleton of “The Crystal Maiden”. This preserved artifact is that of a teenage girl, thought to potentially be a sacrificial victim. After years of calcification, “The Crystal Maiden” eerily glistens in the lamp light of her observers, continuing to sparkle while resting in her tomb.

The Actun Tunichil Muknal adventure is a rush for any who dare trek through the cave. More suitable for those in good physical shape and above the age of 8, you begin your quest by suiting up with your helmet and headlamp, with suggested pants or swim shorts, and shoes you don’t mind submerging into the clear blue water. From here, you will follow your guide through the invaluable ruins. Alternating between climbing over rocks, and swimming down the glassy surface, you will conquer ankle and chest deep depths. Once you reach the underground museum realm, you will climb into a labyrinth of dry chambers that will lead you to the majestic cathedral-like main hall. This towering chamber is 350 meters in length, and 50 meters wide, filled with artifacts and sacrificial remains. One last climb and you will embrace the queen of the ruins, “The Crystal Maiden”. Belize ATM Cave - Caving in Belize

With such a precious site, the guides are very protective and proud of the ATM. They take every precaution to make sure this historical treasure stays as intact as possible. They cautiously lead each visitor through, and absolutely NO photography is allowed in or around the cave. Furthermore, they are attentive to those surrounding areas of such a temple. No bug repellant is allowed during the tour, as the water streams down to villages that use it as fresh drinking water.

Said to be “the real Disney World”, Actun Tunichil Muknal is a tour that will combine the beauty of the Belizean jungle, with the magnificence and mystery of Mayan cultural history.  On your travels to Belize, make sure to head to San Ignacio and challenge the jungle and all of it’s treasures.
