New imaging and data from satellites has revealed that the Amazon rainforest is hardier than we thought. Even in the face of deforestation, the Amazon is showing signs of resilience and scientists now believe that clear-cut areas of the forest can make a come-back rather than turn to a “Savannah” state where lush regrowth is not possible. If human impact were to be relieved, data points to possible recovery. Given that the Amazon rainforest contributes to over 1/4 of the carbon absorption, this is hopeful news. See the full story here.
