Jose & Monica’s Journey Through Greece and the Balkans: Hidden Gems and Wonders

Yampu Tours’ Founder and President, Jose Irauzqui, along with his wife, Monica Irauzqui, Vice President of Yampu Tours, recently embarked on an unforgettable journey through Greece and the Balkans. Flying in from Paris, they explored the picturesque Greek islands of Zakynthos, Paros, and Corfu, then traveled through Albania, Montenegro, and Serbia. From UNESCO sites and island cruises to historic city tours, the itinerary offered an incredible blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and unique adventures. 


Zakynthos: Turtle Island and Shipwreck Cruise (July 4 – July 9) 

The journey kicked off on Zakynthos, Greece, where Jose and Monica embraced the island’s charm and stunning scenery. On July 7th, they experienced the Turtle Island Cruise, a captivating afternoon on the waters of Laganas Bay, home to the island’s renowned loggerhead turtles. As they cruised the coast, they enjoyed crystal-clear waters and breathtaking views of Zakynthos’ rugged cliffs and beaches.
  

The following day, July 8th, they set out on the Full-Day Shipwreck Cruise, which brought them to the iconic Navagio Beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs, the beach’s turquoise waters and white sands offered the perfect backdrop for photos and a refreshing swim. These days on Zakynthos were an idyllic start to a trip full of adventure and relaxation. 

 


Naxos, Koufonisia and Paros: Island Hopping in the Cyclades (July 9 – July 19) 

Leaving Zakynthos, Jose and Monica continued to Naxos on July 9th, where they rented a car to explore the island’s authentic villages, historic sites, and scenic beaches. For three days, they discovered highlights such as the Temple of Apollo and Plaka Beach, enjoying the island’s laid-back atmosphere and charming Greek culture. 

  

On July 13th, they took a ferry to Koufonisia, where they spent two tranquil nights at Olvos Koufonisia. Known for its stunning natural beauty and serene beaches, Koufonisia was a peaceful retreat where Jose and Monica could unwind and immerse themselves in the island’s coastal charm. From here, they ferried to Paros on July 15th, staying until the 19th to experience Paros’ lively beach towns, ancient ruins, and relaxing atmosphere. 


Corfu and Saranda: Greece to Albania (July 20 – July 21) 

Their journey continued with a flight to Corfu on July 20th, where they stayed for two nights in Corfu Town, known for its Venetian architecture, narrow streets, and beautiful views. Corfu’s old town provided the perfect setting for wandering through historic alleys, sampling local cuisine, and soaking up Greek island life before setting sail for Albania. 


Saranda & Ksamil: Gems of the Albanian Riviera (July 22 – July 23) 

Jose and Monica began their adventure on the stunning Albanian Riviera, arriving in the vibrant coastal city of Saranda, known for its breathtaking Ionian Sea views. With a warm, sun-drenched climate and welcoming ambiance, they couldn’t have asked for a better start. They spent the day exploring Ksamil, a true paradise with soft sands and mesmerizing turquoise waters. The allure of this idyllic town was complemented by visits to historical sites, including the remnants of a Bektashi shrine and a Venetian castle from the 16th century. After settling into their hotel, they savored an evening of freshly prepared seafood and were immersed in the warm hospitality of the locals. 

The following morning, their adventure continued with a scenic drive to the Blue Eye, a natural spring near Rruga Lefter Talo, where they marveled at the vivid turquoise waters surrounded by lush greenery. Next, they headed to the picturesque town of Gjirokastër, a UNESCO World Heritage site, renowned for its well-preserved Ottoman architecture. Exploring the cobblestone streets, they visited the imposing Gjirokastër Castle and took in stunning views of the valley below. Their journey then led them to Vlorë, where history and nature beautifully intertwine. Exploring the Independence Museum and the charming streets lined with Ottoman-era architecture, Jose and Monica appreciated the city’s cultural significance. They wrapped up their day with a delightful dinner of traditional Albanian cuisine before settling in for the night in this historic gem. 


The Historic and Colorful Heart of Albania: Berat, Tirana & Durres (July 24 – July 25 

Jose and Monica began their day in Berat with a traditional breakfast, soaking in more of the city’s timeless charm before heading off to Tirana, Albania’s vibrant capital. Known for its lively atmosphere and colorful murals, Tirana dazzled them with a mix of historical and artistic flair. The iconic Skanderbeg Square captivated their attention, surrounded by landmarks like the National Opera and the Clock Tower. Exploring cultural sites such as the Et’hem Bey Mosque and the National Museum of History offered insight into the city’s rich heritage. As the sun set, they enjoyed a bustling evening in Tirana, filled with the city’s energy and charm.

The next day brought more exploration, starting with a visit to Durres, one of Albania’s oldest cities with a fascinating Roman amphitheater built under Emperor Hadrian. From Durres, they crossed the border into Montenegro, stopping in the enchanting coastal town of Budva.  


Montenegro: Budva, Kotor, and the Boka Bay (July 25 – July 28) 

Montenegro greeted Jose and Monica with breathtaking coastal scenery as they arrived in Budva on July 25th. Budva’s Old Town, with its narrow cobbled streets and medieval buildings, offered a historical immersion. They visited Porto Montenegro and enjoyed the luxurious amenities along the waterfront, capturing the unique blend of old and new that Budva offers. 

 

On July 26th, they journeyed to Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage site nestled in the Bay of Kotor. They took a cable car up Lovcen Mountain for panoramic views of the bay and surrounding peaks, a highlight of the Montenegro leg of their trip. The next day, they enjoyed a speedboat tour of Boka Bay, stopping at Perast, Our Lady of the Rocks Island, and the upscale Porto Novi resort. In addition, they visited the Savina Winery for a wine-tasting session, savoring the flavors of Montenegrin vineyards. 

Their final day in Montenegro, July 28th, included a visit to Lustica Bay and Klinci Sustainable Village. Jose and Monica had time to relax and explore Lustica’s eco-friendly charm and secluded beaches before preparing to depart for Serbia the next morning. 

 


Serbia: Discovering Belgrade (July 29) 

Flying into Belgrade on July 29th, they embarked on a city tour that revealed the Serbian capital’s blend of history, culture, and modern energy. They strolled through Skadarlija Street, known for its bohemian atmosphere and traditional Serbian dining. To close out their trip, they stayed at the Envoy Boutique Hotel, a cozy spot in the heart of Belgrade, where they reflected on the diverse landscapes, rich history, and incredible experiences of their journey. 


This journey through Greece and the Balkans offered Jose and Monica an extraordinary adventure, combining the serene islands of Greece, the rugged beauty of Albania, the picturesque bays of Montenegro, and the historic charm of Belgrade. Each destination highlighted a unique aspect of the region, making it a truly memorable trip.
