This Week on Instagram: Antarctica
Point your tires south and don’t stop until you run out of land because the frozen tundra of Antarctica couldn’t be hotter. This previously unexplored wonderland has quickly become a popular destination because of the never ending photography opportunities and, of course, the cute penguins.
There aren’t many ways to get down there but the options are growing every day. Private boat rides, big cruises, and even small planes are making this final frontier explorable by everyone. If you can’t make it down right now we’ve got you covered with this gallery of amazing pictures.
Between all of the pictures of cute penguins and sparkling icebergs, a lot people don’t realize how beautiful sunsets can be near the South Pole. As the sun disappears, bright oranges and vibrant reds permeate the sky, lighting up the frozen tundra for a final time. These adventurers can’t get enough of the colors.
Just north of the mainland of Antarctica is the British colony of South Georgia which is a small area of islands that is uninhabitable to humans but not for cute seals like this guy. The Antarctic Fur Seal is native to this island and more than 95% of their population can be found here.
Like we said before, don’t forget about the sunsets. This shot brings out the spectacular colors of this landmass that is usally a blur of whites and greys.
“Calving” is when chunks of ice break off from glaciers and icebergs creating large slides. Some of these breaks can cause waves big enough to overturn boats so cruise ships need to stay a certain distance from glacial edges. Here, a small piece breaks off as a rookery of penguins calmly looks on.
This final picture, from @krystlejwright, beautifully depits a penguin looking for a place to jump off an iceberg. We loved the deep blues and the reflection coming off the water!
