Full Day Petra Experience
Breakfast read more...
Breakfast in the hotel – Start the visit of Petra - is a historical and archaeological city famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. Another name for Petra is the Rose City due to the color of the stone out of which it is carved. Known as the capital city of the Nabateans and currently a symbol of Jordan. In 1812, Petra was introduced by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. It was described as "a rose-red city half as old as time" in a Newdigate Prize-winning poem by John William Burgon. UNESCO has described it as "one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage. The impressive eastern entrance leads steeply down through a dark, narrow gorge called the Siq ("the shaft"), a natural geological feature formed from a deep split in the sandstone rocks and serving as a waterway flowing into Wadi Musa. At the end of the narrow gorge stands Petra's most elaborate ruin, Al Khazneh (popularly known as "the Treasury").
A little farther from the Treasury is a massive theatre, so placed as to bring the greatest number of tombs within view. At the point where the valley opens out into the plain, the site of the city is revealed with striking effect. The amphitheatre has been cut into the hillside and into several of the tombs during its construction. Here are hundreds of elaborate rock-cut tombs with intricate carvings. There are obelisks, temples, sacrificial altars and colonnaded streets, and high above, overlooking the valley, is the impressive Ad-Deir Monastery – a flight of 800 rock cut steps takes you there. Back to hotel in Petra for rest time.
At evening Petra by night: Operates on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Walk through the Siq to the Khazneh following a candle-lit path and enjoy the haunting music of the Bedouins at the Treasury. Tours start at 8.30pm and finish at 10.00pm.

Places You'll See
-
Cairo
The word “Cairo” in Arabic means “the Vanquisher” or “the Conqueror”, understandable when one realizes that it has been a major center of civilization and a cultural crossroads for millennia. One of the largest and most densely populated cities in Africa and the middle east, Cairo is the capital of Egypt. Cairo is most often associated with ancient Egypt due to its close quarters with the ancient ruins of the cities Giza, Memphis, and Fustat. Here is where one can witness the magnificence of the Pyramids of Giza as well as the great Sphynx. Take in the history and local culture with some coffee while enjoying sheesha (flavored tobacco through a water pipe) and appreciating the desert heat.
-
Aswan
One of the hottest cities in Egypt, Aswan sits on the southern end of the Nile River. This ancient city has many places of interest for history buffs as well as fun cultural experiences. Visit the unfinished and largest known Obelisk. If finished the massive piece would weigh nearly 1200 tons! Enjoy camel rides and learn about the area’s culture while drinking tea with the locals.
-
Luxor
The once ancient city of Thebes, Luxor is categorized as the world’s largest “open air museum” with many historical locations with a wide range of archeological sites. Learn of the ancient Egyptians while visiting the decaying temple complex, Karnek. Absorb the methods of mummification at the Mummification Museum before visiting the famous tomb of King Tutankhamun.
-
Amman
Amman is the largest city and capital of Jordan. There are many historic sites in Amman such as the Roman Amphitheater. The city has begun a slow transition from a traditionally historic city to a more modern one. Amman serves as a great central location to explore the rest of Jordan.
-
Petra
Petra is known as the “rose red city, half as old as time”. This is because Petra is home to the magnificent remnants of the Nabataean city, dating back to the 6th Century BC. The city is now World Heritage site due to its historic relevance. It is considered one of the 7 Wonders of the World.
-
Wadi Rum
Wadi Rum is an iconic desert valley of Jordan. It’s terrain is referred to as “moonscape terrain” due to its scenic cliffs and rocky mountains. Most of the land is inhabited except for the few Bedouins who reside in its land. Explore its landscape by jeep or camel for the best experience.
-
Dead Sea
The Dead Sea is shared by Israel, Palestine, and Jordan. At 1269 ft below sea level, the Dead Sea is the lowest point in the world. The water is so salty that no maritime life can survive in its waters. The mineral rich mud on its shores is thought to have therapeutic benefits. Many visitors enjoy floating in the water, as it is almost impossible to sink because of the hypersalination.

Highly recommended trip
Driver and guide were excellent as I have come to expect from Yampu. Good food and comfortable hotels allow one to concentrate on cultural sites. There is much more than Petra in Jordan. Very interesting “desert castles” and the early Islamic art and Byzantine mosaics were fabulous. Highly recommended trip.
