Tour Overview
Experience the Grizzlies of Knight Inlet: a Canadian Safari Expedition with 10-days of exploring British Colombia’s rich wildlife of Knight Inlet and Campbell River with tours of the territory’s urban cultural hubs, Vancouver and Victoria.
With towering mountains, glacier-fed waterfalls, and bio-diverse alpine forests teeming with wildlife, British Colombia is a real west coast adventure spot with unparalleled nature experiences from bear viewing and whale watching to hiking and fishing in its rural destinations of Knight Inlet and Campbell River.
Accessible only by boat and floatplane, the pure remoteness of Knight’s inlet provides visitors with a genuine appreciation for nature. Serving as Canada’s premier grizzly bear viewing destination, Knights Inlet marks the beginning of the Great Bear Rainforest, home to Canada’s largest grizzly bears and the elusive white spirit bear. While viewing the famed bears unobtrusively with expert guides, explorers will appreciate all the necessary comforts in the mostly uninhabited region while staying at a floating resort tucked into Glendale Cove.
Known as the Salmon Capital of the World, Campbell River is home to one of the largest concentrations of grizzly bears in British Columbia who feast on the spawning fish each season. Aside from bear viewing, explorers can travel throughout the inlet, viewing seals, sea lions, porpoises, dolphins, and the occasional minke whale while on a marine tour with great photographic opportunities. Moving closer into civilization, the tour caps off with visits to Vancouver and Victoria to experience the culture, food, and history of the region.

Transfer to the Vancouver Island Float Plane Dock for your short flight to the lodge. Arrival is approximately 10am. For the next 4 days this will be home.
Glendale Cove is home to one of the largest concentrations of grizzly (brown) bears in British Columbia. It is not uncommon for there to be up to 50 bears within 10 kilometers of the lodge in the peak fall season, when the salmon are returning to the river. Although they are abundant in the fall, it is not the only season that grizzly bears can be found in Glendale Cove. Starting in late April the bears return to the estuary from winter dens and start the year feeding on the sedges, succulents, grasses and barnacles that abound in our estuary. This luxuriant spring growth provides the basic nutritional needs for the bears which draws them from the mountains down to the estuary. This is the time to see, at close proximity, the tiny cubs emerge with their ever-cautious mothers. In the summer, the berry crop is very heavy and this helps keeps the bears in the general area. We do not get the high numbers of the spring and late summer/fall season viewing, but we usually see some bears every day.
We view the bears differently in the different seasons. In the spring, we set out in boats so that we can get close to the shore (50 metres) and give our guests a good view of the bears feeding. We still remain far enough away as to not disturb them. Our early summer program continues on the water as well, but if the opportunity arises there may be a chance to use our tree stands. By late August we move to our platforms at the spawning channel although we continue to use the tree and river stands. In all of our viewing programs our guest safety is of utmost importance. We strive to see the bears in their natural environment without having a negative impact on them.

Full day Wildlife Excursion in Glendale Cove
Today read more...
Today begins the first of two full days of activities. As well as bear viewing, a number of other tours are offered. The marine wildlife tour is offered in all of the seasons that we operate but it changes greatly as the seasons change. In the spring, travel throughout the inlet viewing the seals, sea lions, porpoises, dolphins and the occasional minke whale that may travel though our waters. From July onwards, our tours have the added attraction of the orca (killer) whale and when we journey to the world-famous Johnstone Strait, we are almost assured of spending some great viewing time with these magnificent marine mammals. Not only are whales viewed, but the tour includes all of the spring marine viewing as well, so the program lasts for up to 10 hours. In September, the humpback whales return and are added to the list of marine mammals as they start to arrive from Alaska on their way to Hawaii. The viewing of these gentle giants is infrequent, but when it does happen, it is spectacular. ...read less

Knight Inlet Lodge
Situated 60 kilometers from the mouth of the inlet is Knight Inlet Lodge. Our floating resort is tucked into Glendale Cove, which offers one of the few protected anchorages in the inlet, and it is here that you will begin each day’s adventure.
The lodge is a modern one-story facility consisting of 5 cement floats, we like to call ourselves a floating village, plus support buildings. All guest rooms feature comfortable queen size beds plus private washrooms with showers. The resort is finished with western cedar board and batten siding to give it a real west coast British Columbia look and feel. There are 2 outside deck areas, one complete with a gas fireplace, for relaxing on those warm summer evenings.

A ++ experience!
We used Yampu last Christmas (2017) for a 2 week trip in Argentina. From the very first email to the follow up after our trip, everything was perfect with Yampu. The hotel selection was matching our needs, the transfers between locations and airports all went very smoothly, the overall trip plan was a good balance of sightseeing, discovery and personal time. The guides were all so friendly and knowledgeable. This was a A+ experience. Our main point of contact in the USA was Christine Cronin. She did an amazing job for us. We like their services so much that we are now planning another trip with Yampu.

I will consider using your company again
The trip was fantastic. No complaints about the accommodations and I was truly impressed with the transportation arrangements. The guides from the various companies were courteous, polite and extremely helpful whenever a problem arose. The atmosphere on the Caribbean coast (Tortuguero) was completely different from that encountered on the Pacific coast (Guancaste), as was each location along the way. I honestly can’t say I preferred on spot over the others, though perhaps I was little more outspoken about the comforts of Arenal Springs compared to rest. The two beach spots along the Pacific were memorable for the ocean and all the things we did there. All the above said, I have no problem recommending your firm, and yourself in particular, to any of my friends and acquaintances regarding having you help them with their travel plans. Indeed, I have done so repeatedly today and will continue to do so into the future. It also goes without saying that I will consider using your company again when Rosabel and myself start planning our next vacation or adventure trip.
