Begin in Cartagena, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is an archetypal Colombian city filled with historic streets, alley ways and stories. Take in the old, walled city’s tiled roofs, balconies and courtyard gardens, and then head to San Andrés, a Caribbean island northwest of Colombia surrounded by clear, blue-green sea AND some of the most beautiful (and intricate) coral formations in the world. Wrap up your tour in Santa Marta (Colombia’s oldest town on the Caribbean coast).

Wrap up your tour in Santa Marta (Colombia’s oldest town on the Caribbean coast). Founded in 1525 by the Spanish conqueror Rodrigo de Bastidas, Santa Marta is known for its natural harbor and the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, where Simón Bolívar died.

On this Colombia tour, you’ll spend 3 days in Cartagena (where you’ll tour the old, walled city center), take a trip to the Rosario Islands and then spend another 3 days in San Andrés. Finish up your tour with a visit to Santa Marta for 3 days and take a trip to the Tayrona National Park (where you’ll hike through the jungle and explore local villages and stunning beaches).

Prices include: Domestic air transportation from Cartagena to San Andrés and Santa Marta to Bogotá, private airport transfers including one piece of luggage, land transfer from Cartagena to Santa Marta, hotel accommodation including breakfast, meals where specified, guided tours with bilingual guide and entrance fees. Take the flight to Cartagena. Upon arrival transfer to the hotel. Cartagena is the fifth largest city in Colombia and a pivotal port city on the Caribbean coast. After numerous pirate attacks in the colonial era, a wall was built to surround the historic city center and protect its inhabitants. Cartagena is now a popular tourist destination, known for its colonial architecture and charm.

Guided walk along the walled old town. (The walled, colonial city center of Cartagena was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980.) See churches; colonial houses (their balconies and other architectural nuances); the Museum that was the residence of the five-time president of the Republic, Rafael Nuńez; the Santa Catalina bastion; and Las Bovedas (The Dungeons), where one can find hand-crafted souvenirs. Afternoon at leisure.

Cruise to Rosario Islands (to the south of the Bay of Cartagena). These Islands constitute a National Natural Park on account of their 23 coral islands and marine fauna. The coral islands were formed by volcano activity that raised the seabed and created ideal conditions for the development of coral reefs. There will be the chance to swim and snorkel. Lunch Included. Return to Cartagena.

Transfer to the airport to take the flight to San Andres. Upon arrival transfer to the hotel.
Though Christopher Columbus may have discovered San Andres on his second voyage, the English and the Dutch controlled it for over 30 years in a rare collaboration. The English were in charge of matters related to colonizing, and the Dutch managed commercial exchange in the Antilles. The island is now well-known for its beaches.
Note: No direct flights on Tuesday.

Santa Marta Tour

Half-day visit to Santa Marta's colonial district, the cathedral and the Anthropological and Ethnographic Museum (a good means to learn more about the Tayrona civilization). Next up: the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, the house where Simón Bolívar died in 1830, and last but not least, a visit to Taganga Bay and El Rodadero.

Pueblito Archaelogical Park – Tayrona National Park

Get a very early start (6:00 am) and head from Santa Marta to the small, settler village of Gourd. After a 2 and 1/2 hour walk through forests and mountains, arrive at Pueblito, an archaeological site that showcases the masterful engineering and speaks to the rich culture of The Tayrona, a pre-Columbian civilization.
The trail then descends to the beaches of Cabo de San Juan, where there will be a chance to swim in the Caribbean Sea. After that, continue to the Natural Pool and Arenilla Reefs and cross a hill to reach the Canaveral and return back to Santa Marta by car. Lunch included.

Notes: Yampu also offers other programs to the park with less hiking. Yellow fever vaccinations are compulsory, and be sure to bring mosquito protection. This day trip includes: transportation, tickets, (guided) hiking, lunch and professional assistance during the entire journey.

Our trip was excellent!

Highlights from our trip: Bogota museums and the Sunday bike ride (absolutely fabulous guide for that), Hotel in Villa de Leyva (the best!), Medellin (wonderful Aquarium, also visit to Level 1 neighborhood, also great restaurant), Botero sculptures and museum, walking around in Cartegena, hotel in Cartegena, great restaurants in Cartegena, snorkeling.
