Tour Overview

On this trip split your time between the Selous Game Reserve, in southeast Tanzania, and Saadani National Park, on the northern coastline. Also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Selous covers an area four times larger than the Serengeti and is one of the last remaining places in the world where one can see the endangered wild dog. On the contrary, Saadani is much smaller but provides both the experience of a wildlife safari and the white sandy beaches along the Indian Ocean.

Besides the wild dog population, Selous is also known for its huge population of elephants, but it also offers a large selection of plains game, buffalos, lions and other predators. The Rufiji River runs through Selous and is the life blood of the region. It is home to many hippos and Nile crocodiles. The river provides excellent game viewing, especially in the dry season when animals congregate along the banks. One can also do river safaris, walking safaris, night drives and fishing expeditions. Popular catches include tiger and cat fish.

North of Dar es Salaam, the beeches have been described as some of the best kept holiday secrets in the world, where all of the accommodation fronts the beach. Activities include superb diving, snorkeling, dhow sailing, fishing and kayaking as well as endless walks along deserted beaches. The coastline also has convenient access to Saadani National Park, which is a great safari experience on its own.

With the Wami River running through the National Park to the sea, it is a breeding ground for hippos, Nile crocodiles, fish eagles, tiger & cat fish and a plethora of other fresh water marine life. A river safari is an absolute must do. However it is also home to Wildebeest, antelope, duiker, reedbuck, zebra, giraffe and baboons whilst populations of buffalo and elephant laze in the shade or in the wetlands seeking shade from the sun. Predators come out at night to hunt and these include lion, leopard, mongoose and others

Established in 1922, the reserve was named after Captain Frederick Courtney Selous, a naturalist, explorer and hunter, who died there in action in 1917. In spite of the fact that for many years it was an important hunting area, Selous still contains the greatest concentration of big game left on earth.

The trip you set up for me was flawless.

The trip you set up for me was flawless. The guide met all my expectations. He was helpful and protective. I did learn that in Africa, time is a relative thing. I soon learned that when James told me we were one half hour from anywhere, I could count on an hour. I saw every major animal, but one, including the Black Rino, one of the most endangers specie in the Crater. I took 900 pictures. I can tell you without a doubt, that your people can take care of a person my age and should promote that fact. I loved Nxabega. However, I was prevented from going to my tent for a rest when a family of Elephants started eating the trees between the lunch area and my tent. They were all first rate camps, but Sopa was exceptional. If you wish me to fill out anything, let me know. One funny story. I needed to go to the bathroom. James asked me to wait while he drove about a half a mile to high ground, so he could watch out for animals while I attended to the problem behind his 4×4. As we get to about fifty yards from the place we planned to stop; three lions walked over the hill and past our vehicle. You would be surprised how fast the urge to go disappears under these circumstances.
